4 Best Real Stone Bird Baths (2018)

Real stone bird baths have a rustic natural look that suits almost any landscape and they’re durable enough to last till the end of time. They don’t need protection from cold weather, and you’ll never have to worry about colors fading or peeling off.

1. Granite Boulder Birdbath

I love this bird bath because you can see that it’s made of real stone that looks very natural in the garden and blends nicely with any landscaping.  Thanks to natural variations in the shape and color of the stone, each individual bird bath is unique. It is hand carved in the USA.

The basin is large enough for several birds to use at once, is not too deep at 1.75 inches (4.5 cm). The bottom is ground but not polished, so birds can get a good footing and the wide rim offers a nice place for them to land. If you wanted to spoil your birds by adding a big rock in the center or an interesting branch to perch on kind of ruins the look. Not this one – those natural objects will blend right in! There’s also plenty of room for a Water Wiggler or fountain if you want to add motion for extra allure.

Don’t worry about the white finish in the product photo -that’s the hand ground stone finish. Once you put water it in, it will “pretty up” like any other wet rock and you’ll be able to see the beauty of the natural stone.

The medium-sized version of the granite boulder bird bath stands about 21 inches (54 cm) high and wide. You can also get a larger version that stands about 28 inches (71 cm) high. The base is ground flat for steadiness and at 175 lb (80 kg) for the medium 300 lb ( 136 kg), kids, raccoons, lawnmowers and strong winds won’t be able to tip this bird bath over.

No need to worry about cold-weather damage either – the natural boulders have already stood up to harsh weather for thousands of years, so you know this product will last forever.

On the down side, these quality products are expensive and so is the shipping. This product doesn’t ship to Canada.

 2. Two Turtle Birdbath

I love that this bird bath features two cute little turtles (or frogs) that rise out of the water enough for birds to perch on. It’s made of natural granite and fits in well with any kind of landscaping.

This is a good-sized bird bath, with an 18 inch (46 cm) basin that’s big enough for larger birds (or several birds) and at 26 inches (66 cm) high, is solid enough not to tip over easily.

It weighs around 275 lbs (125 kg) so unless you’re a super muscle man (or have one handy), you’re going to need help getting this piece into the garden. Luckily, it comes in two pieces!

You can’t beat solid rock for weatherproofing and durability, so you know this one will last forever. This bird bath is made in the USA.

Sadly, it only ships to the continental USA and fairly pricey. But what well-made, hand made product isn’t?

 3. Natural Columnar Basalt Bird Bath

I love this bird bath for it’s geology – it is made from basalt, a very hard volcanic stone that forms into many-sided columns as the lava cools. (Is that ‘cool’ or what?) The pedestal and bowl aren’t carved, they are the natural shape of the stone and are unfinished, while the inside of the bowl is textured so birds can get sure footing. It’s also very stable and hard to knock over.

The geometric shape adds a touch of sculptural feel to this bird bath, so it’s a good choice if you want something less lumpy-looking than boulders.

Because it’s real stone it will stand up to weathering and freezing temperatures without damage. This bird bath is made in the USA.

This item is about 15 inches (38 cm) wide and about 16 inches (41 cm) tall and weighs abut 175 lbs (80 kg).

It’s on the pricey side, but unless you whack it with a sledgehammer (and maybe not even then), you’ll never have to replace it. Ships only in the continental USA.

 4. Hand Carved Granite Bird Bath

This cute ground level bird bath has a really nice broad rim for birds to land on and comes in four natural stone colors: tan as shown here, pink, and light or dark gray. See the other colors. (I personally love the look of pink granite.) As another item that is hand made from naturally occurring stone, its dimensions and shades may vary slightly from piece to piece, but that means you’re getting something unique!

A smaller bird bath, the bowl on this one is 1.5 – 2 inches (about 4 to 5 cm) deep and only about 10 inches (25 cm) wide. That limits its use to fewer and smaller birds, but it could be just right for a hidden side-garden, a balcony or a patio.

The whole unit is about 15 inches (38 cm) wide and 3.5 inches (10 cm) tall and weighs about 60 lbs (27 kg), and is made in China.

Some things to think about when you buy a stone bird bath:

  • They bigger ones are extremely heavy, so you may need some help assembling and/or placing yours when it arrives.
  • Because they’re so heavy, if you plan to put one of the pedestal-style models on garden soil, it will need a solid foundation to stand on. Here’s how to make one.
  • Real stone bird baths may not stand tall enough for great viewing or for discouraging predators. For extra height you can create or buy a brick or concrete column to stand them on, or place them on top of a thick, flat slab of rock if you have one.
